INTERVIEW

A CONVERSATION WITH ZAK SPEARS - by Mark Adams from VidioView - Spring 2004
Zak has been in the gay XXX business for close to 14 years, and has made 80 movies or so. He is quite aptly described as a "legend", at least by the folks at the GayVN's. Amazingly, he still has the attitude of a newbie, with all the enthusiasm he must have had at his first movie shoot. And certainly one of the easiest porn personalities to do an interview with, as one question will get you at least 15 minutes of uninterrupted, fascinating chatter.

Mark: So I guess you're enjoying your life as Zak Spears, porn star.
Zak: I never use the words "porn star". I hate the word "star". My longevity in this business has been a godsend. How many people in this industry have been around for fourteen years? Not to even mention not being fucked up on drugs, and not drinking excessively. I'm not a goody twoshoes by any means, hell, I'm putting my hand up people's butt. There are so many people in this industry that are wacked. Don't get me wrong, I know some great people. Wonderful, sweet, down-to-earth, most of them are mid-Westerners.
So you're not a party guy?
Zak: I lead a very quiet life. I don't do parties. I will do the Will Clark Bad Boys' Pool Party, because that's an AIDS benefit. I like working with organizations that help people, as long as it's in good taste. I like doing stuff for children. I love children. I've got nieces and nephews myself that I adore.
Would you like some children of your own?
Zak: If things were different, I'd really like to have probably a son and a daughter. But right now, in my situation, I wouldn't even think about it. I'd want to make sure I could bring them up the best possible way. I wouldn't want a child unless I was absolutely set and secure. Right now, that wouldn't be the case.
Let's talk about "Zak Attack," the new Falcon movie.
Zak: I'm very proud of it and really happy with it. I got to work with two people that I'm absolutely in love with. One is Thom Barron, who I've had a crush on, and watched many, many years while he was doing porn, and I finally got to work with him. He's a beautiful man, incredibly sweet. He and his real-life partner of three years flew in from Zurich, and we had breakfast one day, and later that day, I got to fist Thom. It was hot and fun; we were very into each other. It was like a dream come true. I also got to work with Brad Patton, and I can't say enough nice things about this guy. He's angelic, he's beautiful. And that's beside that fact he has a fucking tree trunk hanging between his legs. The guy is a really really sweet sweet person. Our whole scene, from rim, suck, right down to fuck, was only two and-a-half hours. They turned the cameras on, did a few adjustments every once in a while, and just let us go. It was a hell of a lot of fun.
Any others in the can, so to speak?
Zak: I've got one coming out this summer, called "Bolt" from Rascal and Channel 1. With me in this one is Johnny Hazzard, he's very fun, very sexual. A very hot boy. He's into a little kink, which I really enjoyed. While I'm fucking him, I'm flogging him. A lot of yelling, a lot of fun. Another one coming out is "Hard Cops" from Massive Studios. We're definitely going to be doing a lot more projects together. They've really got their shit together. This one was with Lane Fuller, another model I'm very much into, and who I think is hot as hell. He let his body hair grow, he's got a rock hard little ass. He's another great guy. I'm very fortunate. I get to choose the people I work with.
To who would you attribute your success in the business?
Zak: Chi Chi LaRue and Falcon Studios. I came to them when I first started in the business after being in a couple of movies I wasn't very happy with. I said, "Listen, I know what works for me. Give me a list of four people, give me photos of what they look like, how big their dicks are, and what they're into, and make sure they're gay, because I don't want to work with 'gay-for-pay' models."
Like I don't know the answer, but why?
Zak: Because they're a pain in the ass. They're pretty to look at, but who wants to sit on a set, while you're trying to get a hard-on, they're sitting there talking about fucking pussy all night long. I don't really give a shit about their girlfriends. How rude. I don't find it attractive, nor do I think it's hot to have the "fag" servicing the "straight guy". I don't see anything exciting about that. When I see two guys who are really into each other's bodies, dicks, and butts, and everything like that, that is hot to me.
How was working with Massive Studios?
Zak: Massive went so far as, not only to meet my price, but went over it, which was very sweet of them. They were extremely forthcoming and honest, they took care of everything I could possibly want. I'm not a demanding person when I'm on the set, I like making other people feel comfortable. If they're not comfortable, the scene is not going to look good. I'm really, really proud of this movie.
And then there was Lane Fuller.
Zak: Like I said, a dream come true. Todd Maxwell, who was put into the scene with us, is a very handsome man. He's versatile, he's muscular, he's well-built with a very handsome face, a sweet man. I judge people on how they treat other people. Todd was a really great guy to work with.
You seem to have as much enthusiasm for the business now as you probably did when you first started.
Zak: I absolutely love this business. I grew up in the Midwest with all that Midwest value crap you hear about. I may live in Los Angeles, but I don't believe that I've become the jaded person that people think happens when you move to LA. I've matured since I moved out here fourteen years ago. I have met some of the most incredible people who have so much to share that you can learn from. My life has been so enriched. I have nothing negative to say about this business. I've been lucky enough to meet some wonderful people. Chi Chi LaRue, I love him to death. We have never said a harsh word to each other. Then, there are those people in the industry you just want to stay the fuck away from.
Is porn your full-time job?
Zak: No, I've got other stuff going on, I bartend at one of the most popular leather bars in LA, the Faultline bar. I call that my "play money". My full-time job is personal trainer at a private gym. I'm also working on video editing.
Do you hang out with other industry folk?
Zak: No I don't. My life is very private. I prefer a small group of intimate friends. I don't mean "intimate" like in "fucking".
What kind of stuff do you like in your personal sex life?
Zak: I like everything from love-making and romance, with the candlelight dinners, all the way up to "I want to put you in a sling, tie you up, and put my hand up your butt". I'm becoming more and more top-oriented.
Any words of advice for anyone interested in getting into the gay XXX business?
Zak: You need a realistic point of view. You should have a lot of fun, plan on doing it for as long as you want, but don't take it seriously. Unless you want to make it a business. If you can't have fun, then you shouldn't be in the business to begin with.
What do you think when you're called a "legend"?
Zak: I laugh. The people at AVN have always treated me with respect. I thank them for all they've given me over the years. When you get these awards, it's nice to be noticed. But you can't dwell on awards.
I get questions about your new "shaved head" look.
Zak: It's a phase I'm going through. It's something different. I've got the hairy body and I'll never shave it. My hair is soft, people can lay on my chest and the hair won't poke their eyes out. Long story short, when I get bored with it, I'll grow it back.
What's in the future?
Zak: I'm working on my own production company. I have three scripts that I'm very proud of, two of which I have written myself. They are very dark, leather-ish, and I can't wait to get them produced.
Any final words to wrap this up?
Zak: Yes, Mark, I want to thank you and VidioView very much for this kind opportunity to interview with you, and also to say "Thank you" to all the people who really matter and who support us in this industry, the fans. I really appreciate their loyalty and participation, as without them, none of us would even have been here. All my best, to you all.
